Just flip it! |
Schools are used to teachers presenting their lesson in regular way: in class with students sitting at their desks "paying attention" and writing in their notebook the homework they have to do for next class.
So, why not flip it? Why not be a little disruptive and change it all. This is where Flipped Classroom comes in. I will give you some ideas that describe the benefits of this technique.
1 Have you ever wondered why most of your students don't do their homework? Or they hand it in incompletely? Well, this is because they usually see complex concepts in class and don't quite understand them, so they go home with a half-eaten idea of what they have to do and they get stuck, unable to complete the task. Flipped classroom helps in this case by providing the afore mentioned concepts first in their house, allowing them to understand everything possible and develop their own questions to be asked in class.
2 Because the instructions are given at home, the interaction student-teacher in class is improved and enriched. Also, the teacher has more time for a one-on-one talk.
3 The possibility of personalizing instructions for each student is real. You can give the special attention a student needs when they are struggling.
4 This much interaction gives the student the opportunity to internalize concepts more deeply, because they have more time to analize everything and the aim of the class is to enhance the learning process and not the teaching.
5 Each student has their own learning pace. So, if they can listen to an explanation at the speed they want or repeating every part they need, pausing, stopping, fast-forwarding, etc. they will have a better chance to really understand the lesson.
6 What about the students who are absent? In a traditional classroom, it would be sacrilege to miss a class. However, with this technique students have a chance to be "present" and not get lost next time they go to class.
7 The same goes for teachers. Classes wouldn't be post-poned and rescheduled. Therefore, students won't get behind in their subjects.
8 Traditional classroom = flexibility? I don't think so. Once you start doing something one way there is no other way to finish it. Flipped classrooms allow you to flipped the lessons you deem necessary or the ones you see your students having difficulties with.
9 Last but not least, this point goes well with number 4. The teacher is in the classroom to help students. Teacher are no longer the focus of the class and they can actually monitor and help students directly.
